The Golden Rule, with a Twist

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. - Matthew 7:12, referred to as the ‘The Golden Rule.’

I read the Bible as a kid but only started really studying it around the age of 26. When I say study, I’m referring to going way beyond just reading the Bible and started incorporating the study of words, context, culture at the time of the writings, history of the writers, literal interpretations, life application, self-reflections, etc. In doing so, I continually expand my understanding of the contents of the Bible, why the writers were inspired to write what they did, and how to apply those words to my life.

Matthew 7:12 is a perfect example of why we should slowdown a bit when reading the Bible and focus on each word or phrase as we just might gain a deeper understanding of what we are reading. Sometimes gaining a deeper understanding of one word can change everything,

So whatever you “wish” others would do to you, do also to them. (quotes added)

The word ‘wish’ is interesting because it has a couple of applications. In its noun form, it means, something you want or hope for. In its verb form, it is a desire or hope that will likely not be attainable. Similar, but just enough different to make a profound difference. In its original context, Matthew used the verb form with the literal translation being, You might desire, meaning it’s a hope which will likely not become a reality.

However, the verse does not contain any conditions, meaning it doesn’t say treat them a certain way if they do the same to you or to make them do the same to you. It simply says you are to do the right thing regardless of their actions or response.

With that deeper understanding, if we were to paraphrase and expound on this verse, it would go something like this…

So, while you desire others to treat you a certain way, you should treat them the way you desire to be treated even though you are fairly confident they have not nor will they do the same towards you. In other words, treat others the way God said to treat them through his prophets, regardless of whether or not you think they deserve to be treated that way.

Let that sink in for a bit.

Now, with regards to the the names of those who just popped into your head followed by the thought, “No way can I love [fill in the name],” seek God’s intervention and strength to love them too.
