King of Kings
Throughout Colossians, Paul is confronting the false teachings of that time. He is reminding the church at Colossae of who Jesus is and what he did for us that day on the cross and of the strength and healing he provided there. It is equally as important for us to understand these truths as well.
While Jesus is referred to as many things in the Bible such as savior, deliverer, protector, etc., he is two things before any of those…He is God and He is King.
Jesus Christ is King
He was King at the beginning
John 1: 1-3, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
He was King at His birth
Matt 2:1-4, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews: We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.
He was King at His death
Matt 27:37, Above His head they placed the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.
He was King at His resurrection
Mark 16:19, After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.
He is King Today
Col 2:9, for in Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.
Now that that’s settled the next step is to decide…
Is Jesus Christ Your King?
Is Christ your King? I believe all of us would answer yes, as would the church at Colossae. However, do you really understand what that means? Exactly what does Jesus is my King look like?
Christ Jesus is my King means I must allow every aspect of my life, first and foremost, to be influenced, directed by, placed under his control. It’s where the terms WWJD (What Would Jesus Do) and WDJD (What Did Jesus Do) came from.
Let's Get Real
I would say Jesus Christ is my King. However, if I was to be completely honest with myself and with God, if the question was, Is Jesus Christ the King of Every Aspect of My Life, I would have to say, not always. Why is that? Because we are made perfect in God’s eyes does not mean we are perfect, we are just forgiven of our imperfections. However, that does not mean we shouldn’t always strive toward perfection which means when we identify an area we have not given to Jesus, we should, through prayer, ask for the wisdom and strength to relinquish that area to Jesus.
Why is that so important? Because any area where you are taking control away from Jesus is an area where you are trying to serve two masters, Jesus and yourself, and the Bible tells us that is not possible. Jesus makes this clear in Matthew 6:24. Although he is speaking about the love of money, the principle is applicable to all aspects of our life.
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. Matt 6:24
Spend some time in prayer today and ask to be shown areas of your life where you are in control, not Jesus. Then give that area to Him. The funny thing is, many times Jesus gives it right back to you but from his perspective instead of yours. Meaning the direction you choose will glorify him not you.
