Healing at the Foot of the Cross

Throughout Colossians, Paul is confronting the false teachings of that time.  He is reminding the church at Colossae of who Jesus is and what He did for us that day on the cross and of the strength and healing He provided there.

It is equally as important for us to understand these truths.

Jesus Christ Is King

  1. He was King in the beginning
John 1: 1-3, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He [Jesus] was with God in the beginning

  2. He was King at His birth
Matt 2:1-4, After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews: We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.

  3. He was King at His death
Matt 27:37, Above His head they placed the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.

  4. He was King at His resurrection
Mark 16:19, After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.

  5. He is King Today
Col 2:9, for in Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. See also Col 1:15-19

Is Jesus Christ Your King?

  1. I believe most of us would answer yes, as would the church at Colossae.

    1. Does your life reflect your answer?

    2. What if I was to change the question a little and ask: Is Jesus Christ in control of every aspect of your life?

    3. I know that if I was to be honest with myself and with God, my answer would not be yes and Paul explains that was the case with the Colossians as well. See Col 2:20, Col 1:11

    4. The problem is that any area where you are taking control away from God is an area where you are trying to serve two masters (God and yourself) and the bible tells us, you can not serve two masters, Matt 6:24, so this can be an area of constant friction and unrest.

Conviction vs. Condemnation

  1. Sin is anything placed before or assigned higher value than God

  2. Holy Spirit Convicts us about our actions while Satan Condemns us as individuals, or at least he tries to (major difference), see John 16:8 and John 5:24

Healing

  1. Step One: Confession

  2. Step Two: Action

    1. Healing is found at the foot of the cross

    2. Col 2:13, 14

  3. Step Three: Acceptance

Walking Through the Steps

Step One - Confession

Confession - Take an index card or a piece of paper and write down any area in your life where you have not given control to Jesus.

Step Two - Give those areas to Jesus

  • There are many ways to do that, one way is mentally by telling Jesus you are giving it to Him.

  • Another is to physically hand it over to Him. You can do that by following His example and taking those areas and nailing them to the cross.

  • This is the point where I asked the class to physically nail their cards to the cross. It was a very moving experience. You can do the same by creating a cross which in itself is an interesting experience.

Step Three - Acceptance

  • Believing that healing is a free gift which requires nothing on our part other than to simply accept it.

This format was designed as a handout for the in class lesson. I realize that may be a bit choppy and doesn't afford the opportunity to interact as we did in class. Therefore, if you have questions, please contact me and I'll do my best to respond to your questions, Email Me
